The Story Behind

Nestled in a lush forest in Lenno on Lake Como, the Villa del Balbianello is an 18th-century mansion, ideal for films. Dominating the Lenno region, this villa, built in 1787 on a former Franciscan convent, offers panoramic lake views.

The six-story villa retains architectural elements from the original convent, including two bell towers. Owned by FAI-Fondo Ambiente Italiano, it has hosted writers and travelers like Guido Monzino and Alessandro Manzoni. The villa features a terraced garden, direct boat access, a caretaker's house, an icehouse, a woodland house, a greenhouse, and an extensive park. Its interior preserves 19th-century furnishings, including a rich library and a rare glass painting collection.

The villa's Loggia, with its evocative atmosphere, has been a setting for international films like "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" and "Casino Royale."

Historically, Villa del Balbianello inspired figures like Pliny the Younger and became a retreat for intellectuals and aristocrats in the 19th century. Accessible only by boat initially, it features several buildings perched on limestone rocks, with the last vestige of the Franciscans' passage being the church with two bell towers.

The villa's golden age began in 1787 when Cardinal Durini transformed it into a Renaissance-style palace. After WWI, it was restored by American Butler Ames and later by Guido Monzino, who filled it with travel memorabilia and art. In 1988, Monzino bequeathed it to FAI, ensuring its preservation and public access.

The villa's 18th-century gardens, with terraces, balustrades, and sculptures, blend seamlessly with the landscape, enhancing its unique atmosphere. The Villa del Balbianello, with its neoclassical architecture, rich history, and natural beauty, captivates visitors worldwide.
