Genève | Capitale Mondiale de l'Horlogerie
Creation Details
Geneva, Capitale Mondiale de l'Horlogerie is an Atelier WOCS creation, meticulously crafted in the Geneva ateliers, where artistic mastery brings history to life. Singularly handcrafted by skilled artisans, this composition was created as part of an exhibition uniting Haute Horlogerie, history, and fine artistry - a collaboration between Bucherer and our Maison.
Produced in a limited edition of 50 numbered pieces, each artwork is authenticated by the Maison’s seal, individually signed and numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The Story Behind
This unique piece pays tribute to the city of Geneva: its famous Jet d'eau, seen from the classic perspective par excellence, the sublime and timeless view of the Geneva riviera. The background's landscape unveil the Salève, the Môle, the Aravis and the Mont-Blanc mountains.
The typography, which proudly celebrates Geneva as the world capital of watchmaking, was chosen under the influence of the poster artists of the 1930s. It is a nod to a pivotal period in the history of Geneva's fine watchmaking industry and particularly to its standard of excellence, governed by the emblematic Poinçon de Genève.
Introduced in 1886 by the Geneva Grand Council, the seal, exclusively reserved for mechanical watches assembled, regulated, cased and controlled in the Canton of Geneva, is the physical mark that distinguishes strict manufacturing and the highest quality standards in fine watchmaking.
During the first decades following its creation, this institution certified only a small part of the watches produced in the canton of Geneva, mostly watches registered by independent watchmakers rather than by manufacturing companies. The conditions for granting the Poinçon de Genève are particularly strict. From the 1930s onwards, the watchmaker Patek Philippe became the institution's main client and helped to develop the aura of the finest quality that surrounds the timepieces inspected by the Geneva Seal. By choosing to submit its timepieces to the approval of this Geneva institution, Patek Philippe honoured the canton, in a patriotic effort that would carry the colours of Geneva's fine watchmaking industry to new heights.
