The Story Behind

Dominating the Cheville pass, bordering the forty-meter high Tsanfleuron glacier to the south, the impressive rock formation of the "Quille du Diable" (Devil's Skittle) symbolizes the history of the Diablerets massif and especially the origin of its name.

Surrounded by mysteries, the threatening wall rises above the valley higher than 2,900 meters above sea level. The place is full of fantastic tales, it has a reputation for being a cursed site. It is the Sabbath place of demons and all evil geniuses. The Devil's Skittle, also called the Tower of St-Martin, served as a goal or a skittle in the games played by the demons. The blocks thrown against it could miss their target and fall to the bottom of the Derborence Valley, causing disasters. The worried shepherds then examined the mountain and invoked divine grace, convinced that the mountain was the suburb of the devil and the damned.

Obviously, to continue the tradition of the Diablerets artworks, this creation is full of hidden symbols: from the position of the red helicopter and its propellers in a nod to the halo of the angels (Lucifer being a fallen angel according to several religions) or the name of the Swiss writer and poet Charles Ferdinand ''Ramuz'' who refers to the skittle of the Devil in the novel Derborence. There are also less obvious symbols that you will have time to discover while observing the rock and the snow in details.

Nowadays, you won't need to worry. Les Diablerets is rather a wonderful place to go hiking. Nestled at the foot of the Devil's Bow, you will also discover the ''Refuge de l'Espace''. From the terrace of this small mountain snack bar, you can taste regional specialties while admiring the flights of the bearded vulture and the breathtaking view of the Derborence valley and the Valais.
