Geneva is a wonderful cultural melting pot: it is estimated that 192 nationalities live side by side, thanks to the hundreds of international organizations that have chosen the city for their headquarters, starting with the UN (for its European headquarters), the ICRC and CERN, the research center in which the World Wide Web was invented in 1989.

Geneva has never been the capital of Switzerland. However, it is the most famous city of Switzerland abroad, which is the pride of its citizens. Many powerful people of this world have met there, from Julius Caesar in 58 BC. J-C, to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the child of the country, through Jean Calvin, the great figure of the Protestant Reformation.

St. Peter's Cathedral sits in the center of the Old Town, built on a hill overlooking the lake. Several of its alleys are connected by secret passageways, that allowed the residents of Geneva to take from behind the soldiers of the Duke of Savoy, when they attacked the city by surprise in 1602.

One of these secret passageways is open to the public during the second weekend of December on the occasion of the Escalade, the festival that commemorates the defense of the city. Another one leads from the Cathedral to the Bourg-de-Four, the square represented on the artwork. This former marketplace is nowadays the bustling heart of the Old Town, with its historic cafés and popular terraces in summer.
