Born as a rugged sports watch that could withstand the game of polo, but eventually evolving into a sophisticated and elegant timepiece, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the most distinctive watch designs ever made.

In the late 1920s, Swiss businessman César de Trey was in colonial India running his watch trading business. During his stay, de Trey attended polo matches involving British officers. Known as the "Sport of Kings", polo is a fast-paced game with strong horses, swinging mallets and competitive players. This makes it particularly dangerous for delicate wristwatches, which regularly get broken during a match. As legend has it, British officers asked Caesar de Trey to develop a durable and elegant timepiece that could withstand shocks and remain intact. Subsequently, César de Trey turned to his friend and watchmaker, Jacques-David LeCoultre.

Together, the two men introduced the Reverso watch in 1931, with a patented pivoting case. The Reverso's case was designed so that it could turn on itself when necessary to remove the fragile dial and expose the durable metal caseback. Polo players could thus rotate the Reverso to reveal either the case back or the dial, depending on whether they were playing a match or not.

Thanks to the Reverso's sleek rectangular lines, Art Deco style and clever reversible case, this Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece quickly became a favourite, and not just for polo players. Today, it is considered a stylish, elegant timepiece rather than a sports watch and remains the brand's most iconic watch.
